European Health Insurance Card - NEW The E111, the form previously needed in order to get a refund on medical treatment in Europe, is being phased out. The form has been replaced by the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC). The EHIC is valid in all 25 European Union countries and entitles the cardholder to medical treatment while in a European Union country. Any current E1.11s are still valid until 31 December but application forms for the EHIC must be sent to to the Department of Health so they can be checked and the card made. This means anyone planning to travel in Europe after that should apply for the card early to make sure they get it in time. Be prepared - check with your local post office as soon as possible!
