Topolino - The Race This Italian event, which will run for the 44th time this year, is generally regarded as the premier event on the Children's Calendar, and the unofficial 'World Championships' for young alpine ski racers. Teams arrive from all over the world to compete, and it has the largest international entry of any of the competitions for athletes of this age group. Forty-three nations were represented last year. That doesn't actually mean that it is a harder race than, for example, the Pokal Loka competition in Slovenia. In Slovenia you are also likely to be racing against the best Austrians, Slovenians, Germans, Italians and Canadians. It simply means that more nations are involved in the Topolino competition. The host nation is allowed a double quota of athletes, and runs qualifying races for the hotly contested places in the few days prior to the event. The event is sponsored by the Walt Disney corporation, and Topolino is a cartoon character - a large box of Smarties to anyone who can give me more details! OK - I had to find out for myself. Topolino is the Italian name for Mickey Mouse!
