"TROFEJ VJEVERICA" The Race
The "Trofej Vjeverica" (Trophy Squirrel), international skiing contest for children, was designed and initiated by a group of enthusiasts from the Samobor Ski Club, and was named after the animal which we all know very well, and which is a symbol of our woods. The first giant slalom contest on Sljeme took place in 1994, on which occasion there was also an opening ceremony on King Tomislav Sqare in Samobor with other Croatian ski clubs as well as the Slovenian guests, Smučarski klub (ski club) Krško coming from the town of Krško. Over the years the contest has gained the quality and obtained all the features of a well-organised international contest for younger and older girls and boys (age 12-15). At the very beginning, when the contest took place for the first time, the idea was to register the Trofej "Vjeverica" with the International Ski Federation (FIS) some day, so that it be regulated by its rules and propositions. In 2003, on the occasion of the 10th "Trofej Vjeverica", as agreed with the Croatian Ski Federation, the chief organisation on the national level, the contest has been registered with the FIS for the first time, and it has entered their official calender during this very season. As agreed with the Croatian Ski Federation, the contest is still being organised by the Samobor Ski Club. Starting from the season 2003/03, the contest includes official national teams of FIS members, which makes this contest what it should be, and gives the initiators and the sponsors another chance to present Croatia, alongside with excellent results of its skiers, as an initiator of large international skiing contests, this one being the first in its modern history. One must not forget that the "Trofej Vjeverica" has been made memorable by the participation and the victories of our best skiers, from Janica and Civics Kostelić to Nika Fleiss and Ana Jelušić, and nowadays the traditon is kept alive by popular "simpići".
