The Race - Pinocchio sugli Sci, Italy

This Children's International Race is a great competition to attend, and is often called the Children's Olympics.  All the leading alpine nations bring their top athletes so the competition for Gold, Silver and Bronze 'Pinocchios' is fierce.  The Austrian, Italian 'A' and 'B' teams, Croatian, Slovenian and Slovakian teams are always locked in battle for the trophies, although a 'lowlander' from Holland did get on the podium in 2000.

The competition has been running since 1983, and previous medallists include:

  • Deborah Compagnoni

  • Isolde Kostner

  • Christian Mayer

  • Janica Kostelic

  • Jure Kosir

Many of the winners go straight into Europa Cup squads in the following season; some, like Janica Kostelic who won both races in 1997, go more or less straight into World Cup racing.

The slalom course is very long, and is run on two different hills for Children 1 and II, but everyone comes onto the same hill on the second race day for the full-length FIS GS.

Points are awarded to all the racers who finish in the top 15, and Team GB is gradually climbing up the leader board.  We were 14th out of 38 Nations in 1999 and 2000, and 13th in 2004.  Our goal is to be in the Top 10 !!!!
