The Race - Pokal Loka, Slovenia

The Pokal Loka Races were first held in 1973, and this season's event will be the 34th Pokal Loka Championships.

Do not make the mistake of thinking that just because you are going to a small country the event will be small.  Last year, for instance twenty-eight nations took part, including some of the major alpine nations such as Austria and Italy.  Austria won the Overall Team title last year, closely followed by Slovenia itself.

It is certainly possible for Great Britain to do well here, and looking back through the results over the years, I see that the British Children's Team was was placed second overall in 1991.  We certainly hope that we can do well in the Team competition this coming season, and maybe win some individual medals!

For those of you who enjoy watching World Cup racing, these are a few of the well known World Cup racers who have won events here in the Pokal Loka Children's Competitions in the past:

  • Franz Heinzer (SUI)           1975

  • Werner Franz (AUT)           1985

  • Corinne Rey-Bellet  (SUI)    1987

  • Urska Hrovat (SLO)            1988, 1989

  • Mojca Sudadolc  (SLO)      1988

  • Janica Kostelic  (CRO)       1996, 1997

The races are a very important event in the National Calendar of Slovenia.  They are usually attended by the President of Slovenia, or at the very least, the Minister for Sport.
