The Race - Uludag Cup

The event in February 2002 will be the 19th Uludag Cup for children, and it will be the 17th time that Great Britain has sent a team to this event.

This is one of the friendliest of the international competitions for athletes in the 11-15 years age group.  This is partly because it is a fairly small competition, with usually only seven nations taking part, but also because all the teams stay together in the same hotel.  It is a very good chance to get to know athletes of other nationalities.

The hospitality offered by the Turkiye Kayak Federasyonu is wonderful, and we are very grateful to them for their invitation to this competition.  In case you are wondering, 'kayak' is the Turkish word for 'ski', nothing to do with Eskimos or small boats!

In 2001, Gemma Harris won a Gold medal in Slalom and bronze in GS.  Other medallists were Melissa Piper, James Kane, Malcolm Roy and Ben Wheeler.  In earlier years British medal winners included Jack Hunt, Forbes Mitchell, Jamie Miles, Zanna Shute, Sam Sage, Danielle Bryson and Erica White.  Traditionally we do very well here, but you may still find that you are competing against some of the best racers in the world.

This event is one at which we have a real chance of bringing home both individual medals and Team trophies.  Last season, Great Britain came second in the men's Team trophy,  2nd in the ladies' competition, and was placed second overall to Bulgaria.

We hope to do even better this season!
