Manager's
Report, 42 Trofeo Topolino 2003
Three
training days gave time for assessment of each athlete by the two coaches.
It also allowed for acclimatisation, and certainly a more relaxed
approach to the races. There was
clear improvement all round with the extra time to settle in. Equipment
problems We
were told that ski and boot checks would be made, and were given the opportunity
to take equipment for checking the day before the first race.
All boots were OK, but we found that six
of our athletes had skis with illegal bindings.
Many of them were factory skis from Rossignol.
Fortunately we were able to sort this out before the event, though it
caused a lot of extra work for the coaches.
Some were not marked with the turning radius, but the jury was happy with
hand-written information added by the coaches. The
Children II Slalom winner (from
Italy) was disqualified on boot height (the
first such disqualification in a children's event).
Again
a large entry - approximately 340 athletes from 44 nations.
Single GS run in each age group. Our team were unable to match the strong international competition on the tough steep and icy pistes, but gave of their best. Some were unlucky in making big mistakes in the middle of otherwise excellent runs. The set up on the hill for training and on the race days was highly professional. Kiro Kotev and Ronnie Naismith deserve enormous praise and thanks for that. It was a source of great pleasure and pride to be part of that set-up - many thanks to both of them. JCS/28
