Code of Conduct for BCST Athletes and Advice for Parents

This is in two sections - the first is the general Code for Skiers as established by the International Ski Federation (FIS), and the second is more specific to those who are part of a Team of alpine race competitors/trainees.  Compliance with both sections is of paramount importance.

Section One

The Skiers Code

Rules for the Slopes

The International Ski Federation (FIS) has established ten rules for the conduct of skiers and snowboarders. In short, they are:

  1. RESPECT . Do not endanger others.
  2. CONTROL . Adapt the manner and speed of your skiing to your ability and to the general conditions on the mountain.
  3. CHOICE OF ROUTE . The skier/snowboarder in front has priority - leave enough space.
  4. OVERTAKING . Leave plenty of space when overtaking a slower skier/snowboarder.
  5. ENTERING AND STARTING . Look up and down the mountain each time before starting or entering a marked run.
  6. STOPPING . Only stop at the edge of the piste or where you can easily be seen.
  7. CLIMBING . When climbing up or down, always keep to the side of the piste.
  8. SIGNS . Obey all signs and markings - they are there for your safety.
  9. ASSISTANCE . In case of accidents provide help and alert the rescue service.
  10. IDENTIFICATION . All those involved in an accident, including witnesses, should exchange names and addresses

 Section Two

   Athletes must:

  • Dress and behave sensibly and responsibly at all times. Follow the instructions of the manager and trainers including those at the venue of the visit.

  • Not take unnecessary risks.  The athlete is reminded that dangerous, reckless, foolhardy or negligent conduct, on or off the hill, will contravene FIS guidelines and may create a serious liability situation. This is particularly relevant where racers are in close proximity to the skiing public.

  • Be sensitive to local codes and customs.  This is a matter of particular importance at the international events where team members are present as guests of the host nation.

  • Be aware that any behaviour that may adversely affect another member of the team will not be condoned.  Bullying, in particular, will not be tolerated.  The same applies to any behaviour that may bring the BSSF or the nation itself into disrespect.

  • Not use or condone the use of alcohol, tobacco or illegal or prohibited drugs.  The athlete must further acknowledge that the BSSF, the BOA, the Sports Council and FIS have the right to conduct random, no-notice, in or out of competition dope testing, and that he/she has read and will comply with the specific rules on Doping and Prohibited Drugs (available from the BSSF office).

  • Look out for anything that might hurt or threaten themselves or anyone in the group and tell one of the management team about it.

  • Note that breaches of the general rules of conduct will be disciplinary matters.

 Declaration to Parents/Guardians

We affirm that all members of the Management Team on the trip will exercise reasonable care with regard to the safety and well being of your child.  All management personnel will be subject to such instruction and vetting procedures as are currently acceptable to the Governing Body (the British Ski and Snowboard Federation Limited) with regard to Child Protection.

We will give information in writing to assist in making an informed decision on whether your child should go on the trip.

We expect that parents and guardians will:

  • prepare their child for the trip by, for example, ensuring that their child is aware of and understands the above Skiers' Code and Code of Conduct.

  • read, understand and agree the attached notice regarding sanctions, and that in the event that an athlete has to be sent home for disciplinary reasons, they will meet the cost.

  • provide emergency contact numbers for each trip.

  • sign the consent form, and fill in the form requesting medical information regarding the athlete.

_________________________

Please note that parents are of course very welcome at these events.  They must normally expect to make their own travel arrangements.  In particular, where transport within the host country (e.g. between airport and resort) is provided by the race organisers, we are unable to guarantee any extra places.

Also, as a normal rule we do not know where exactly the Team will be staying until we arrive in the resort.  The accommodation is allocated by the organisers, often at the very last moment, and again we cannot guarantee extra availability.  We would normally expect parents to make their own accommodation arrangements.

We will usually be able to offer help and advice - please do not hesitate to ask!!
