Blue Peter - 16th January 2002

Blue Peter Snow Spectacular - Wednesday 16th January   Pictures

Well done, TJ (Baldwin) and Jake (Richardson) - great performance on BBC Look East 12th February - excellent skiing, and you both spoke extremely well.

All of you - remember that local papers and TV are interested in you!  Make it easy for them - send them photos and details of selections, results and forthcoming competitions.  Don't forget to wear Trespass clothing for all photo shoots.

Thanks to all of you who have sent me copies of your press cuttings and photographs.  It was particularly good to receive recent articles from the Strathaven papers from Pamela Thorburn.  She took good care to mention the BCST in all press releases, and even gave details of this website.  Also others from Peter Whelan and James Kane - mentioning the Children's Team, and saying that we are looking for financial support.  These give the whole Team a real boost!

These, along with all the older cuttings, are in a portfolio that can be shown to potential sponsors.  Please, all of you, try to place articles, and pictures in your local papers (your school may be happy to help with this, particularly if you give them a special mention).  Send me copies of any publicity you attract in this way.  Make sure that you mention the British Children's Ski Team every time!

Only by concentrating hard on this can we hope to attract interest and sponsorship for the Team as a whole, and also for you as individuals.

Once the racing has started, we will be putting out regular press releases to local and national papers, and you will be able to read them on this page of the web-site.

PRESS RELEASE - 15 MARCH 2002

British Children's Team bring home medal haul.

British Land Alpine Team member Noel Baxter (20, Aviemore) continued his run of good form by finishing a fantastic second place in the slalom event at today's  (Friday's) Croatian National Championships in  Innerkrems, Austria.  He was narrowly beaten by reigning World Cup leader: Ivica Kostelic.

The British Children's Ski Team followed the example of their older Team mates, by bringing home a clutch of medals at the Uludag Cup- International Children's ski race in Turkey today.  Competing against strong international teams, Britain¹s young racers showed their strength in the technical disciplines.
RESULTS
CH 1 Slalom (boys): TJ Baldwin (11, Norwich)       SILVER
CH 2 Slalom (boys) Daniel Palmer, (14, Swindon)   GOLD
CH2 Slalom (boys) Adam Gellatly (14, Gloucester)  BRONZE

PRESS RELEASE – 1 MARCH 2002

14 year-old Brett Haney skied into 14th place in the slalom in the Italian ‘Topolino’ Championships in Pinzolo last week, just as Alain Baxter was fighting his way into the history books as the first British athlete to win an Olympic medal in an alpine event.  Haney was lying 18th after his first run, and but for a couple of errors in the second, would most likely have finished in the top 10.  His result in any case was an excellent outcome in what are the unofficial World Championships for skiers of this age group - the races are run under the auspices of the International Ski Federation (FIS), and 45 nations were competing for honours.  He has tremendous potential for the future.

This is certainly the best result of the season so far for the British Children’s Ski Team.

13 year olds Calum Campbell and Louise Thomas each won 6th places (in giant slalom and slalom respectively) in Andorra at the end of January (31 nations competing), and the team from Great Britain was placed 6th overall in the Ski Interkriterium event in the Czech Republic in early February.  Graeme Palmer (14) from Glasgow skied exceptionally well in the Czech National Championships to take 5th place in the slalom, and fellow Glaswegian Douggie Crawford (also 14) skied into 11th and 14th places in the international slalom and giant slalom respectively.

The team looks forward to competing in Turkey later this month, and then in Abetone , Italy , with a final flourish in Val d’Isere, France in mid-April.

Brett Haney will be the sole British representative at the Whistler Cup in Canada next month, and will be aiming to improve on his 14th position.  He will undoubtedly be challenging for a medal on the slopes of Whistler-Blackcomb.
